The final report from BETCRETE 3.0 is now published. The full report can be read here..
Summary of the report
In summary, the BETCRETE 3.0 report shows that the Swedish cement and concrete industry is making progress towards more sustainable production, particularly through increased use of alternative binders that have reduced the total climate impact (GWP) by approximately 10–15%. Despite this, challenges remain, such as slow implementation of new standards, cyclical fluctuations and varying requirements in procurement. The report underlines the need for national database and system support to better monitor and develop sustainability work.
The goal is for all concrete to be climate neutral by 2045, which requires continued innovation, standardization and coordination between actors throughout the value chain. Data from participating companies shows that the use of alternative binders has increased, but there is a need to develop indicators for different construction segments and to integrate new low-carbon solutions into future sustainability assessments.
Ecometrix platform Archon has been used for data collection, analysis and visualization in the project.
Conclusions from the project:
BETCRETE 3.0 has laid a solid foundation and created an independent platform for knowledge sharing, innovation and collaboration. However, for the transition to climate-improved and long-term sustainable concrete to become a reality across the entire construction sector, it is required:
- Continued development of indicators and analysis methods.
- Stronger and more consistent requirements in projects and procurement.
- Increased knowledge and incentives along the entire value chain.
- A long-term strategy for data-driven follow-up – with secure funding, industry anchoring and digital support.
It is only when these parts work together that the potential of climate-improved concrete can be realized on a full scale – from vision to reality.
Ecometrix is very pleased to have contributed the Achron platform to this important work and looks forward to contributing to the continued work with our full range of technical platforms, analysis and AI expertise.
